Science & Origin of Onyx

Onyx is a type of Chalcedony that occurs naturally with tiny banded parallel layers. The mineral was first reported in 77 A.D. by Gaius Plinius Secundus (Pliny the Elder) and named after the Greek word “claw” or “fingernail” because of its similar resemblance. The name got its use because of the shape and brightness of the bands Onyx shows when sliced. A variety of colors are commonly found throughout various countries of the world. These countries include Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Australia, South Africa, Madagascar, India, and the United States.

 

Ancient Uses

Onyx has been used for thousands of years and has a long history with many different civilizations. The Ancient Egyptians used

 

Onyx in 3,000 B.C. to make pottery items and other utensils. The Ancient Roman and Greek societies used Onyx for jewelry, amulets, and carving materials. Pliny the Elder in his book “Naturalis Historia” described certain techniques used to artificially dye and color other Chalcedony to look like Onyx. One method included boiling Chalcedony with sugar and then soaking it in hydrochloric acid. Another technique was described as heating Chalcedony and then soaking it with nitric acid to remove all impurities.

 

Beware of Fakes!

 

The most common colors of Onyx are black, brown, white, red, and orange. Black is the most popular color on the market, which sometimes results in impure varieties of Chalcedony being dyed black. This has driven the price of Onyx very low because of how flooded the market has become with manipulated versions. We recommend buying from a trusted and reliable dealer because you never know what you could be purchasing.

 

Onyx has also been mentioned numerous times in the Bible and is even said to have been the middle stone in the High Priest’s Breastplate. After King David gave his throne to his son Solomon he went out to gather precious materials for his new temple. One gem mentioned countless times was Onyx.
